What is Counselling?

There is much in the media these days on the high incidence of stress, loneliness, family breakdown, job insecurity, depression, anxiety and suicide in our community. These can all be factors that may reduce your enjoyment of life, lower your mental health…and yet stigma can still be attached to talking about emotional and psychological health issues. It can often be hard opening up to friends and family, particularly if you feel they are being "burdened", are too close to be objective, have "heard it all before" or are part of the problem in the first place!!

This is where talking with a professional counselor, who is totally impartial and available to listen, can be helpful in enabling you to work things through, see options more clearly and gain better perspective. If nothing else, it can often give you peace of mind.

Counselling might be helpful for someone who:stress

  • Is constantly worrying about how to cope.
  • Has persistent anxiety, shaking or nervousness
  • Feels tired all the time
  • Can’t stop crying
  • Hasn’t "been themself" lately
  • Feels overwhelmed
  • Has reduced enjoyment of life
  • Isn’t sleeping well

Counsellors treat clients for:

  • Stress - HSC, relationship, work
  • Trauma - post-traumatic, accident, operation, sudden bad news, crime victim sadwoman
  • Marriage/relationship counselling –
  • Anxiety/panic attacks/phobias/compulsive behaviours
  • Addictions - gambling/alcohol/drugs/eating
  • Eating disorders – bulimia, anorexia, binge eating
  • Pain management
  • Depression and anti-depressant users
  • Childhood issues – incest, abuse, neglect
  • Parenting issues
  • Grief/loss - relationship breakdown, sickness, job loss, death of loved one

Often the above experiences are manageable with the support of family, friends and work colleagues. However, if these are the cause of issues in the first place, or if you want some independent objective professional support, seeing a professional counsellor can be helpful.

"For someone who was so reluctant to go see a therapist, it has been a really positive experience. I dont know what I expected but I know I thought it would be negative...it wasnt, it has been very helpful. Most helpful has been talking about it and then underpinning that, the tools I picked up and the reinforcement along the way" E. N

I will no doubt be back to see you at some point this year. You were the only counseller who ever made any substantial progress with me. You have no idea how much you helped me, and to go away and be in such a fantastic frame of mind was truly unreal. I owe so much thanks to you, Tessa! J.P

“I have seen other professionals before who I just couldn’t move forward with.  The moment I met Tessa I knew that we were going to form a close bond and that she could help me get well.  I immediately felt comfortable with Tessa and able to talk to her about anything without being judged.  Tessa has taught me the skills to manage an eating disorder that has consumed me for a long time.  For the first time in many years I feel like a normal person with a lot to look forward to.  I haven’t been this happy in a very long time.  Thank you so much Tessa!“ Jenny D

"I tried a few different kinds of councelling services before seeing tessa, and found them either too inpersonal and limitated in addressing all the interrelated aspects of life i was struggling with. I found her holistic approach very helpful in the sence that i could use her ideas and exercises in everday situations. I saw immediate changes in my thought patterns, the ways i responded to events and people that otherwise caused great distress. I would recommend this style of councelling to anyone becasue it is very flexible and can be taloured to your specific personality, offering many different ways to address things. For example, i am a uni student and responded well to articles and self help books that tessa specifically advised to me to read outside her sessions. This could have otherwise been over wellming to do considering all the material out there these days." Kim V
