Name: Tessa Marshall
Industry: Counselling (especially couples and eating disorders), Career coaching, Leadership Coaching
How and why did you get started in this business?
My background was in corporate sales/marketing roles and then I ran my own executive recruitment/outplacement business for ten years. I had some counselling and coaching when I needed support after having the two kids and was struggling with work/life balance issues.
This was so helpful to me that I decided counselling & coaching was a career that could combine my love for helping people grow with my people/corporate background and was something I could better balance with family than my previous work.
What is the most enjoyable aspect of it?
Whether it is the health of the client’s balance sheet at work, the health of their relationships or their own “inner” emotional health and body image, this work enables me to help people find greater success, happiness, confidence and well-being. That is a real buzz…..and I have to practice what I preach so it has helped me with my own work/life balance, my relationships and ensuring I take care of myself!
What has been your biggest challenge?
Sometimes practicing what I preach is easier said than done! Especially when it comes to body image issues and my own relationship with food! Also, sometimes although counsellors and coaches are meant to be good listeners, I fail abysmally with my own kids!!
What has been your greatest success?
Managing to juggle the diversity. I have really leveraged my background of working in large corporations for ten years, then running my own recruitment firm for another ten before getting into counselling through Lifeline and building my own coaching and counselling practice over the last 12 years. I have also used my own life struggles and experiences. This has meant I can turn my hand to career coaching, corporate work and go deep into human behaviour with 1:1 clients. I LOVE that diversity and it is what keeps me sane.
How does your membership of WWN assist you in your working life?
I find meeting and sharing with other like-minded women to be very invigorating. My line of work can be quite isolated and lonely so having that connection is vital to me. I suspect new friendships, potential clients, great new skills learnt at the workshops and business contacts will all be a nice “icing on the cake”!
